Introduction
I want to talk about Paul’s exhortation to Galatians to “Walk in the Spirit” today (Galatians 5:16). As a Christian, I enjoy wonderful freedom in Christ. It is truly the desire of Christ that I will be free but I must not allow freedom to become a ‘license’ to sin. If I am not careful, desires of the flesh can wreak self-destruction. To prevent this the apostle Paul instructs me to walk in the Spirit. Now the question raised by most Christians is ‘How do I walk in the Spirit? In today’s sermon, I am going to show you three things you must-do if you want to walk in the Spirit.
1. To walk in the Spirit Study God’s word
Read Psalm 119:11 – We need to know the will of the Spirit before we can walk in agreement with the Spirit. We learn His will by studying His word.
A. It teaches us His will, (Psalms 119:9)
B. It warns us when we fall short of His will, (Hebrews 4:12)
C. It nurtures the soul, (Deuteronomy 8:3)
2. To Walk in the Spirit Watch and Pray
Read Matthew 26:41 – There are three occasions in which Christians become most vulnerable. In these times watchful prayer helps to guard ourselves.
A. In times of great sorrow, (Luke 22:45)
B. In times of boredom, (2 Samuel 11:1-4)
C. In times of great need, (Matthew 4:2-3)
3. To walk in the Spirit resist the Devil
Read James 4:7 – Jesus is our greatest example in resisting the devil. Prayer and God’s word were his weapons.
A. In prayer he found the strength to resist the devil, (Matthew 4:2)
B. In God’s word, he found the wisdom to answer the devil, (Matthew 4:3-8)
C. Finally, the devil left him for a short period, (Matthew 4:9-11)
Application
I want to conclude my message with three applications I was able to draw from this great passage of scripture.
A. How to study the word?
I. Study regularly & systematically, (Psalm 119:11)
II. Write down your thoughts & observations, (Habakkuk 2:2)
III. Pray the Holy Spirit will help you apply the observations, (James 1:23-27)
B. How to watch and pray?
I. Beware of your Achilles heel the enemy might exploit, (2 Samuel 11:1-4).
II. Beware of compromising situations. Ex: desperation, (2 Samuel 11:5-14)
III. Learn to pray in the Spirit, (1 Corinthians 14:15)
C. How to Resist the devil?
I. Deprive him of any opportunities, (Ephesians 4:27)
II. Pay careful attention to his schemes, (Matthew 16:22)
III. Rebuke him in the name of Jesus, (Matthew 16:23)
