THE STORM-DEVOTION ON MARK 4:35-41

by Virtual Preacher ~ September 1st, 2008

We read how Jesus calmed a storm in Mark 4:35-40. However we must remember the disciples were well experienced fishermen who had survived many storms as such strong storms were very common in the sea of Galilee. But at this moment the disciples were extremely scared . The Bible tells us that Jesus was sound asleep. Isn’t that funny? How could Jesus be fast asleep in the midst of a storm?

My dear friends, today I would like to tell that life is like a boat. And we have to face storms of trials, tribulations, problems, obstacles, disappointments, challenges and frustrations. But what matters is, the way we respond to these situations. Do we question the existence of God? Do we accuse God for not caring for us? Do we doubt God’s love for us?

When I read this passage I have a very strong feeling that God intentionally let the disciples to go through the storm so they can learn from Jesus. As experienced fishermen they must have attempted to survive the storm with their own strategies. But when every thing failed they accused Jesus.

Dear brothers and sisters, when ever you face a storm in your life first calm down (like Jesus was asleep in midst of a storm) and hand it over to the savior. Let him handle the situation for you. Never depend on your skills, talents, experience and knowledge alone to solve the problem.

Secondly have faith in God. In verse 40 after calming the sea, Jesus asks his disciples “why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (NIV) Have faith in God and let him take control of your life in times of trouble. Don’t panic, for God is your savior.

“Hide me now, under Your wings,
cover me, within Your mighty hands

when the ocean rise and thunders roar,
I will soar with you above the storm,
Father, You are King over the flood,
I will be still
and know You are God.

Find rest my soul in Christ alone
know His power in quietness and trust

when the ocean rise and thunders roar,
I will soar with You above the storm,
Father, You are King over the flood,
I will be still
and know You are God.”
